Picking Leshrac into an enemy Bristleback forces you to play against your hero's own strengths. Leshrac wants to run at enemies with Pulse Nova and Diabolic Edict, dealing constant magic damage in a close radius. Against Bristleback, this is a fatal mistake. As soon as Bristleback turns his back, not only is that damage heavily reduced by his passive, but the constant ticks of damage also trigger a nonstop barrage of automatic Quill Sprays. Leshrac’s primary damage output ends up getting himself killed faster than it hurts his target. It’s a fundamental mismatch of kits where one hero’s core offensive tool directly fuels the other’s defense and return damage.

This dynamic shapes the entire game. In the laning stage, Bristleback can play aggressively, knowing that any extended trade heavily favors him. Later on, he can comfortably frontline against Leshrac, largely ignoring him to run down supports while Leshrac melts to the return damage from Quills. To have any impact, Leshrac is forced into buying expensive lockdown like a Scythe of Vyse or a break from Silver Edge, significantly delaying the items he needs to survive and deal damage.
