What makes a coherent Dota 2 team composition?

A coherent Dota 2 team composition is one where all five heroes serve the same game plan: it mixes physical and magical damage, has at least one reliable initiation and one save, aligns its power spikes around the same timing window, survives its lanes, and can state its win condition in one sentence. Five individually strong heroes that fail any of these checks lose to five average heroes that pass all of them.

The five checks

Damage mix
At least two damage types the enemy must itemize against separately. Five physical cores die to one timely Assault Cuirass; all-magical drafts fall off against Pipe and BKBs.
Initiation & save
One reliable way to start a fight on your terms, and one way to undo the enemy starting it on theirs (a save, a dispel, a counter-engage). Missing either means you only fight when the enemy chooses.
Timing alignment
Your heroes should spike in the same window. A draft that is half early-tempo, half late-game scales into nothing: too passive to use the early spikes, too rushed to reach the late ones.
Lane viability
Three lanes that can at least survive. A composition that concedes two lanes starts every game 10 minutes behind its own plan — often unrecoverably at ranks where comebacks need coordination.
One-sentence win condition
"We group at 20 and take towers off the second spike." If your five picks don't produce a sentence like that, the draft has no plan — only heroes.

The four draft archetypes

Most winning drafts collapse into one of four plans. Knowing which one you are drafting toward — and which one the enemy is — tells you what to pick and ban next.

Teamfight / wombo-combo
Stack area ultimates and force 5v5s around objectives. Wins the mid-game window; loses if the enemy refuses to group before your key cooldowns expire.
Pick-off / tempo
Catch isolated heroes, convert numbers advantages into towers, end before scaling matters. Needs vision control and initiation range; falls off vs. saves and buybacks.
Split-push / map pressure
Threaten two sides of the map at once and take free structures while dodging 5v5s. Needs escape tools and waveclear on the rest of the draft to defend the base.
Protect-the-carry scaling
Four heroes buy time and space for one late-game monster. The cleanest plan and the most punishable one — everything before minute 30 is damage control.

Synergy is shared timing, not a buzzword

Two heroes "synergize" when one reliably creates the situation the other needs: a setup stun into a channeled ultimate, a mana battery under a spell-spammer, twin power spikes that hit at the same minute. How do you counter-pick in Dota 2?

Counter-pick by targeting the enemy's win condition, not their heroes one by one: pick what invalidates their plan (mana burn into spell-reliant cores, constant pushing into greedy scaling drafts, saves into pick-off lineups). A direct hero counter is worth taking when the matchup edge is large and the hero still fits your own composition — otherwise it is a trap.

Counter-pick or comfort pick?

Most hero-versus-hero edges are worth a few percentage points; playing a hero badly costs far more. The practical rule: take the counter when the edge is large and you can actually play the hero; otherwise take your comfort pick and counter with itemization and movement instead. This matters more at lower ranks, where execution variance dwarfs draft edges.

Lane counter vs. game counter

A hero that wins the lane can still lose the game — and vice versa. When you read a matchup table, ask when the edge applies: laning-phase counters (harass, kill threat) fade after minute 15; structural counters (mana burn vs. mana dependence, break vs. passive-reliant heroes) last all game. Structural counters are the ones worth spending a pick on.

Ban strategy by rank

Bans should remove the enemy's most probable good outcome, and what that is changes by bracket. In Herald–Guardian and Crusader–Archon, ban the simple pub-stompers that over-perform at that bracket — the per-rank tier lists show exactly which heroes those are, and they differ sharply from the global list. At high ranks, ban the patch's contested meta answers and your opponents' signature heroes instead.

How big do matchup edges get?

How do you read the meta and draft with it?

Read the meta on two axes — win rate and pick rate — and watch the direction of movement, not just the level. High pick + high win marks the patch's contested answers (first-phase pick or ban material); low pick + high win marks niche stompers you can often get for free; a rising win-rate trend catches buffs and item interactions before the tier lists fully reprice them.

Pub meta is not pro meta

Pro drafts optimize around coordination that pubs don't have: heroes that need four teammates to follow up under-perform in ranked and over-perform on stage. Patch days reset the board

How should a team prepare drafts before a match?

Prepare drafts the way you would prepare any decision under uncertainty: know your own hero pool cold, scout what the opponent is likely to do, rehearse the pick/ban sequence against realistic responses, and pressure-test the final composition with a model that tells you the honest probability — not the flattering one.

    Know your pool, and your opponents'
    Star your heroes on the tier list to build your pool, and check each pooled hero's counters page for what you should expect to see picked against you. Scouting an opposing stack? Their last 20 drafts tell you 80% of what they'll do.

    Rehearse the sequence, not just the five
    Captains Mode is 24 decisions, not 5. Run full pick/ban sequences in the BP simulator — it lets you branch at any step, roll back, and see how the win probability shifts with each pick, so you learn which of your choices actually moved the needle.

    Assign roles before you fall in love with picks
    A composition only works if someone can actually play each position. The role-aware predictor scores the draft with positions attached — the same five heroes can swing meaningfully depending on who farms and who supports.

    Pressure-test the final five
    Before you lock, put both drafts into the win predictor and try the alternatives you argued about. If two options differ by half a point, pick the one your team executes better — the model measures the draft, not the players.

Honesty note: no draft tool sees execution. Use the probability to compare options, not to blame the draft after a loss.

Does the draft really decide a Dota 2 game?
Partially. The draft typically accounts for ~7–12 percentage points of win expectancy; the rest is execution — lanes, fights, and macro decisions. That means draft edges are real and worth pursuing, but no draft is a guaranteed win or loss: a "45% draft" still wins when played better.
Should I counter-pick or play my best heroes?
Play your best heroes unless the counter is large and you are competent on the countering hero. Most matchup edges are worth a few percentage points, while playing an unpracticed hero costs far more. The exception is structural counters that last all game (mana burn against mana-dependent cores, break against passive-reliant heroes) — those are worth a pick.
What should I ban in ranked?

How many heroes do I need for ranked?
A pool of 3–5 heroes per role you queue is enough to dodge most counter-pick situations while keeping real practice depth on each hero. Depth beats breadth: a five-hero pool you execute well outperforms a twenty-hero pool of first-picks you know superficially.
