Bristleback vs Pangolier

How this matchup plays

Running down a Pangolier as Bristleback seems simple on paper. The plan is to stack Viscous Nasal Goo and spam Quill Spray until he falls over. The problem is that Pangolier’s whole game is about escaping that exact situation. The slow from Goo doesn't stop him from using Swashbuckle to create distance and reposition to hit your face, bypassing your damage reduction. He can’t get bursted by your spells because he can Shield Crash for some mitigation and then simply use Rolling Thunder to get away if things get too dangerous. It ends up being a constant chase that rarely results in a clean kill for Bristleback.

In teamfights, this means neither hero really wants to focus the other. Pangolier can’t commit to killing Bristleback, so he looks for disruptive stuns on more fragile heroes instead. Bristleback, in turn, finds it frustrating to try and pin down a slippery target, so he often ends up ignoring Pangolier to go after heroes he can actually stick to. The matchup becomes less about a direct confrontation and more about which hero can better execute their game plan against the other four members of the enemy team. The fight is usually decided elsewhere.
