How this matchup plays

Running at a Phoenix seems like it should work for Bristleback, but the fight plays out awkwardly. Phoenix’s goal isn't to kill Bristleback head-on but to control his positioning with Supernova. This forces Bristleback to choose between running away or turning to hit the egg, exposing his front and losing his damage reduction. If he does turn to fight the egg, the attack speed slow from Fire Spirits makes it a very slow process. This gives Phoenix's allies plenty of time to reposition and punish Bristleback while he's vulnerable and distracted from his main targets.

This dynamic means mid-game fights can be frustrating. Bristleback wants to wade in and be a durable front-liner, but a well-timed Supernova can stop his momentum and isolate him. The counterplay is for his allies to have enough burst damage to kill the egg quickly, or to jump on Phoenix before he can get his ultimate off. Phoenix can also use Icarus Dive to escape a charging Bristleback, buying time for his team. The matchup isn't unwinnable, but Phoenix has the tools to consistently disrupt Bristleback's game plan.
