How this matchup plays

Thinking of Tidehunter as a hard answer to Bristleback is a common trap. The logic seems sound: Tidehunter's Kraken Shell can purge off the stacks of Viscous Nasal Goo, which is the main tool Bristleback uses to stick to targets and shred their armor. This makes Tidehunter himself incredibly difficult for Bristleback to bring down. However, Bristleback isn't usually trying to kill Tidehunter. He's a sustained damage dealer who wants to run past the frontline and wear down the squishier heroes with Quill Spray. Since Tidehunter lacks the solo damage to threaten Bristleback, they often end up ignoring each other in a direct confrontation.

The lane matchup frequently becomes a passive farm-off where neither hero can secure a kill. Later, fights depend on which hero can better enable their team. Tidehunter wants to land a big Ravage that holds Bristleback still, letting his allies attack Bristleback from the front and burst him down.
