Centaur Warrunner vs Skywrath Mage

How this matchup plays

Picking between these two heroes in a draft often creates a standoff. Centaur Warrunner is a tempting target for Skywrath Mage's full burst combo, being a large hero who can't easily dodge Mystic Flare. The problem is that Centaur's entire game plan involves stacking health and items that reduce magic damage, making him one of the few heroes who can survive that combo. For Centaur, the issue is getting on top of Skywrath in the first place. Without a mobility item or Stampede, he can be kited indefinitely by slows and spells.

The matchup becomes a game of cat and mouse centered on initiation. A Centaur with a Blink Dagger is Skywrath's worst nightmare, as a Blink into Hoof Stomp is a death sentence. This forces the Skywrath Mage to play from deep in the back lines, completely reliant on his team's vision and protection. Centaur will actively look for opportunities to charge past the enemy frontline to eliminate Skywrath before he can use his spells. Success is less about one hero countering the other and more about which one gets to execute their plan first.
