How this matchup plays

Swinging Starbreaker into a Phantasm illusion pack is exactly what Dawnbreaker wants to be doing. Her kit is loaded with area-of-effect damage that melts Chaos Knight's primary source of mid-game power. Between the hammer swings and the cleave from Luminosity, the illusions disappear almost instantly, leaving the real Chaos Knight exposed and much less threatening. Dawnbreaker is also naturally durable and has an escape with Celestial Hammer, making it difficult for Chaos Knight to find the quick kill he relies on. Her ability to fight multiple targets at once directly counters his plan to overwhelm a single hero.

This dynamic puts Chaos Knight on a strict timer. He needs to get ahead early and try to burst Dawnbreaker before she gets key defensive items online. In teamfights, she doesn't have to guess which illusion is real; she hits all of them. Dawnbreaker can comfortably build items that make her even tankier and better at clearing the illusions, scaling into a problem CK can't solve. Her global presence with Solar Guardian also means she can turn around any gank Chaos Knight attempts on her allies, further disrupting his momentum.
