Earthshaker vs Clockwerk

How this matchup plays

Thinking a Clockwerk initiation is a free setup for Earthshaker is a common mistake. While Cogs can group enemies for an Echo Slam, a well-played Clockwerk often uses Hookshot to isolate and kill Earthshaker before he can get his spells off. Earthshaker's primary tool is Fissure, which he can use from a safe distance to either block Clockwerk from reaching a target or to stun him after he jumps in, allowing the caught ally to escape. This creates a standoff where both heroes are trying to control the initiation. Clockwerk wants to catch Earthshaker, while Earthshaker wants to stay back and counter-punch.

The matchup often comes down to positioning and reaction time. In skirmishes, if Clockwerk finds a lone target, Earthshaker can frequently turn the fight around with a well-placed Fissure. But if that target is Earthshaker himself, he's usually dead. Later in the game, the same dynamic holds true. A successful Hookshot onto Earthshaker can win the fight by preventing a big ultimate, but a failed initiation gives Earthshaker the perfect opportunity to punish the entire enemy team. Neither hero has a clear, built-in advantage over the other.
