Kez vs Phoenix

How this matchup plays

Picking a melee duelist like Kez into Phoenix is often a drafting mistake. Phoenix systematically dismantles heroes who need to get close and land attacks. Fire Spirits is the main problem, as the attack speed slow completely neutralizes Kez's damage output and makes it impossible for him to win a trade. Even if Kez finds a good angle to jump in, Phoenix can simply Icarus Dive away to create space. Kez's parry abilities are meant to block single attacks or spells, which offers little defense against the sustained, area-of-effect pressure Phoenix applies with his entire kit.

Throughout the game, Kez is forced to play on Phoenix’s terms. During the laning stage, he struggles to secure farm under constant harassment. In mid-game teamfights, Kez’s attempts to burst a target are frequently shut down by a well-timed Supernova. This puts his team in a terrible position, forcing them to focus the egg while taking damage or to abandon the fight entirely. Kez wants to find and isolate a target to duel, but Phoenix makes the battlefield so chaotic and dangerous for a melee hero that Kez can rarely find a clean opening to do his job.
