How this matchup plays

Choosing between having these heroes on your team or facing one as the other often comes down to a few key spell interactions. The reason they work so well together is also why Legion Commander has an edge against Phoenix. Press the Attack provides a basic dispel, easily removing the crippling attack speed slow from Fire Spirits. This allows Legion to ignore Phoenix’s primary defensive tool against physical damage dealers. Furthermore, a successful Duel on Phoenix prevents Supernova from ever being cast, cleanly removing the hero before its ultimate can turn a fight.

Throughout a match, this dynamic forces Phoenix to play on the back foot. Once Legion Commander has an initiation tool, Phoenix can't safely position for a big Supernova because the threat of being jumped and killed is too high. A careful Phoenix can still contribute from long range with Sun Ray and try to use Icarus Dive to escape, but its core game plan is disrupted. Legion Commander pressures Phoenix's positioning and limits its ability to take over teamfights, creating a consistent, though not overwhelming, advantage.
