Shadow Fiend vs Sand King

How this matchup plays

A surprise Burrowstrike on a glass cannon like Shadow Fiend seems like a guaranteed kill, but the fight is more complicated than that. Sand King has to commit his entire kit, including Epicenter, to secure the kill. If Shadow Fiend survives that initial burst—perhaps with an item or a teammate's help—he can immediately turn with a full-power Requiem of Souls. Because Sand King needs to be right on top of his target, he's extremely vulnerable to that counter-initiation, which can often kill him faster than he can kill the Fiend.

This matchup becomes a game of cat and mouse centered on key items. Sand King will look for a Blink Dagger timing to find and delete Shadow Fiend before he gets too big. The Shadow Fiend player knows this and will prioritize getting a defensive item like a Black King Bar or Eul's Scepter to survive the initiation. The game often comes down to which hero gets their core item first and can force a fight on their own terms. It's a race, and either hero can win it.
