Shadow Fiend vs Tidehunter

How this matchup plays

Teamfights often turn on whether Shadow Fiend can successfully channel Requiem of Souls. Tidehunter provides a straightforward answer with Ravage, which can lock down and interrupt Shadow Fiend from a great distance. This threat alone forces the SF player to be much more careful with their positioning. In the lane phase, Tidehunter's Kraken Shell makes him resilient to the constant harass from Shadowraze, allowing him to farm and apply pressure without getting pushed out. He can reduce Shadow Fiend’s attack damage with Anchor Smash, making it harder for SF to last hit and build souls.

Choosing Tidehunter can be a safe way to prepare for a potential Shadow Fiend. During the game, this creates a cat-and-mouse dynamic where the SF must constantly track Ravage's cooldown. A patient Shadow Fiend will wait for it to be used on an ally before committing, or itemize specifically to survive the initial stun. If Shadow Fiend gets a significant gold lead, he can sometimes burst key targets before Tidehunter can react. However, the constant pressure of a potential fight-resetting ultimate means SF can rarely play with the full aggression his kit wants, giving Tidehunter a consistent, if small, advantage.
