Night Stalker vs Viper

How this matchup plays

Jumping a lone Viper seems like exactly what Night Stalker wants to do, but it's often a trap. Viper's kit is well-suited to standing his ground against a physical diver. Corrosive Skin punishes every right-click, slowing Night Stalker's attack speed and returning damage. More importantly, a well-placed Nethertoxin will break Hunter in the Night, stripping away Night Stalker's passive speed advantage and leaving him stranded. Even Crippling Fear isn't a death sentence, as Viper can continue to apply his debilitating Poison Attack slows without needing to cast spells, turning the aggressor into the victim.

The first night cycle is often a test of positioning for both heroes. If Night Stalker gets the jump with an ally, he can secure a kill before Viper can react. If Viper anticipates the gank and kites him through Nethertoxin, he can turn the fight with his sustained damage and slows. Later, the duel remains very close, coming down to who has better vision and which hero has the backup to commit. A Black King Bar can help Night Stalker close the deal, but Viper can also itemize to survive the initial burst, making this a genuine coin flip.
