Pangolier vs Viper

How this matchup plays

Controlling Pangolier's aggression revolves around Viper's ability to apply pressure and break. Nethertoxin is a major problem for Pangolier, as standing in it disables his Lucky Shot passive, making trades much less favorable. However, Pangolier has excellent tools to dictate the engagement. Swashbuckle lets him easily reposition out of Nethertoxin, and the threat of Rolling Thunder looms large. Using his ultimate purges Viper Strike completely, turning Viper's most reliable lockdown into a temporary inconvenience that costs him his biggest cooldown.

The result is a tense standoff at most stages of the game. Viper often has the edge in a direct lane, using his corrosive damage and break to suppress farm. As the game progresses, the dynamic shifts to being about cooldowns. Pangolier can't play aggressively if his ultimate is down, as a single Viper Strike leaves him vulnerable. Conversely, Viper has few answers to a full Rolling Thunder initiation, especially since Pangolier can use Shield Crash to mitigate some of Viper's magic damage while rolling. The fight often goes to whoever baits out the other's key spell first.
