How this matchup plays

Dealing with Supernova is often straightforward for Riki. He can use Tricks of the Trade to dodge the initial stun and immediately start attacking the egg from a good angle. Even before that, a well-placed Smoke Screen can silence Phoenix, preventing him from casting his ultimate in the first place or using Icarus Dive to get to a safe position. Riki's natural invisibility also makes him a constant threat, forcing Phoenix to play cautiously and making it risky to lead an initiation. The direct counters to Phoenix's biggest spell give Riki a solid advantage in duels and skirmishes.

This pressure plays out across the map. Riki excels at finding a lone Phoenix and bursting him down. Phoenix needs to play much closer to his team than he might like, relying on them to provide vision and peel if he gets jumped. For Phoenix to win a fight, his team has to be ready to protect the Supernova from Riki specifically. It’s an edge for Riki, not a complete shutdown, because a five-man fight where Riki gets controlled first can still go Phoenix's way. Riki has to pick his moment carefully.
