Fights between these two often hinge on a single cooldown. Skywrath Mage brings a potent silence with Ancient Seal, which can completely prevent Phoenix from using Supernova and turn a big teamfight ultimate into a quick death. The magic amplification also makes it much easier to burst Phoenix down before the egg is even an option. On the other hand, if Phoenix successfully casts Supernova, Skywrath is one of the worst heroes to deal with it. His low attack speed is crippled by Fire Spirits, and if he can't kill the egg, the area-wide stun is a death sentence for a fragile, immobile hero like him.

This dynamic creates a constant mind game through the mid-game. The Skywrath Mage player must try to hold his silence for the Phoenix dive, while the Phoenix player looks for an opportunity when that silence is used on someone else or is otherwise on cooldown. It often comes down to vision and positioning, as neither hero wants to be the one initiating on the other without backup.
