Phoenix vs Spirit Breaker

How this matchup plays

Charging a Phoenix with Spirit Breaker can be a double-edged sword. Icarus Dive gives Phoenix a reliable escape from Charge of Darkness if he has vision. If Spirit Breaker does manage to connect, a reactive Supernova can punish the gank and turn the kill attempt around completely. However, that same Charge gives vision to Spirit Breaker's whole team, making it much harder for Phoenix to position for a good ultimate. A Spirit Breaker with Bulldoze can also ignore some of the slows from Fire Spirits, letting him get more attacks on the egg before the stun lands.

This tension defines the matchup all game. Spirit Breaker's job is to find Phoenix out of position and lock him down before he can cast his spells, especially Supernova. A successful charge that catches Phoenix alone can neutralize his teamfight contribution entirely. Phoenix’s plan is to anticipate the charge, stay close to his allies, and use Spirit Breaker’s aggression as the setup for a fight-winning Supernova. It really comes down to which hero gets the jump on the other and whose team is better positioned to follow up on the initiation.
