Primal Beast vs Viper

How this matchup plays

Controlling the map comes down to a fundamental conflict of range and mobility. Viper’s constant slows from Poison Attack make it very difficult for Primal Beast to get a clean Onslaught onto a priority target. Even if he does connect, a well-placed Nethertoxin turns off his Uproar stacks, neutering his damage and tankiness. This forces Primal Beast to commit big cooldowns for an uncertain result. The dynamic flips, however, if Primal can close the distance. Without an escape, Viper is extremely vulnerable to being locked down by Pulverize if he gets caught out of position.

This standoff defines how teamfights play out. Viper's job is to sit in the back, make the battlefield a swamp of slows, and dare the Primal Beast to try and run through it. He creates a zone of control that Primal has to respect. To win the fight, Primal Beast needs to find a better angle, usually by flanking or using a Blink Dagger to get on top of Viper before the slows and break can be applied. The entire engagement can hinge on whether Primal Beast can get his ultimate off or if he gets kited to death first.
