How this matchup plays

Being a big, slow frontliner makes you a tempting target for Riki, who is always looking for backs to stab. Tidehunter, however, is exceptionally durable and can often ignore the constant chipping away. His Kraken Shell not only makes him tanky but also provides a crucial dispel, letting him walk out of Smoke Screen's slow and miss chance without much trouble. While Riki is a constant nuisance, he lacks the burst to bring down a hero as tough as Tidehunter on his own, making solo kill attempts fairly ineffective.

The dynamic across the game hinges on teamfight execution. Tidehunter's goal is to land a decisive Ravage, and a Riki caught in it is usually a dead Riki. On the other hand, a patient Riki player can wait for Ravage to be used or dodge it entirely with Tricks of the Trade, then move in to clean up the vulnerable back lines. Neither hero directly counters the other; instead, success depends on which one can better impose their preferred style of engagement on the enemy team.
