Wraith King vs Vengeful Spirit

How this matchup plays

Picking Vengeful Spirit often comes down to who you plan to isolate with Nether Swap. Using that spell on Wraith King feels inefficient. His game plan revolves around dying once to bait out major enemy spells, and Venge's ultimate is a premium spell to draw out. Killing Wraith King the first time frequently costs key cooldowns from Vengeful Spirit’s whole team, but because of Reincarnation, he simply gets back up to keep fighting. This makes Venge's signature contribution much less effective at securing the objectives that usually follow a successful pickoff.

Throughout the mid and late game, this dynamic forces Venge's team into a difficult position. Committing everything to kill Wraith King twice is a huge investment, often leaving them with nothing left when he revives with his team behind him. Trying to ignore him to reach his backline is also risky, as it lets him hit supports freely. The Wraith King player can take more aggressive positions, confident that a Vengeful Spirit swap isn't the death sentence it is for most other heroes. Venge has to focus on enabling kills on his more fragile allies instead.
