Skywrath Mage vs Vengeful Spirit

How this matchup plays

Playing against Vengeful Spirit forces Skywrath Mage onto a much slower, more defensive build path. The constant threat of Nether Swap means he often has to rush a Force Staff or Ghost Scepter instead of damage items, which slows down his ability to control the map with burst kills. Vengeful Spirit’s core function is to break positioning, and Skywrath is a hero who depends entirely on staying safe in the back. Her swap is a direct answer to Mystic Flare, pulling him out of his ultimate and into a spot where he can be instantly killed.

This advantage holds up all game. Early on, a support Vengeful Spirit can rotate and set up easy kills on a core Skywrath by swapping him under a tower or into her allies. In later teamfights, she can always trade her life to eliminate him before he unloads his damage combo. The result is that Skywrath Mage can rarely play his ideal game. He's always reacting to Vengeful Spirit's aggression instead of setting the tempo himself, making it hard for his team to build momentum.
