Axe + Shadow Fiend

Why this works

Picking Shadow Fiend often means you're looking for a perfect initiator, and Axe can provide exactly that. A clean Berserker's Call clumps enemies together and holds them still, giving Shadow Fiend an ideal window to land every Shadowraze and a full-damage Requiem of Souls. Axe's job is to create that perfect moment, and Shadow Fiend's is to convert that lockdown into a won teamfight with his massive area-of-effect damage. When it works, it's one of the classic wombo combos.

The execution, however, is all-or-nothing. The entire strategy hinges on Axe finding a clean initiation. If his Blink Dagger gets disabled or the Call catches the wrong targets, Shadow Fiend is left dangerously exposed. He's a fragile hero who has to commit to medium range to deal his damage, and if the enemy team can survive the initial burst, they can often turn and kill him immediately. This makes the pairing feel very feast-or-famine from one fight to the next, with game outcomes often decided by a single well-timed or mistimed jump.
