Why this works

Facing this pair in a teamfight presents a difficult choice. Bristleback wades into the enemy team, forcing them to turn and deal with his constant Quill Sprays and slows from Viscous Nasal Goo. This chaos provides the ideal cover for Phoenix to use Supernova. Enemies are caught between trying to burst down the tanky Bristleback from the front, or turning their backs to him to attack the egg. The attack speed slow from Fire Spirits makes destroying the egg even harder, prolonging the threat of the stun.

This combination is most effective during mid-game fights where space and positioning are key. Bristleback serves as the ideal durable frontline, absorbing attention so Phoenix isn't the primary target. However, the plan can fall apart if the enemy team has the right tools. Heroes with high mobility and attack range can often find an angle to hit the Supernova from a safe distance, or a coordinated team can simply burst Phoenix down before he can even use his ultimate. The success of the duo often depends on which team gets the better initiation.
