Chaos Knight + Drow Ranger

Why this works

Trying to burst a target with this pair shows their conflicting needs. A long Chaos Bolt from Chaos Knight gives Drow Ranger a perfect window to deal damage from a safe distance. The problem is how Chaos Knight closes that distance in the first place. His Reality Rift pulls the target directly on top of him, which can easily put an enemy hero inside the radius that disables Drow's Marksmanship. This core anti-synergy means Chaos Knight's main engagement tool can actively shut down his own carry's primary damage source at the worst possible moment.

Success often depends on careful positioning during pickoffs. If Chaos Knight can initiate from an angle, dragging an enemy away from Drow Ranger, the combination works fine. Drow can add her Frost Arrows to ensure the target can't escape the illusions. In messy, five-on-five teamfights, however, it becomes much harder to control who ends up where. The duo's effectiveness hinges on whether they can maintain this spacing. When they can't, their individual plans get in each other's way, leading to an unreliable outcome.
