Crystal Maiden + Clockwerk

Why this works

Catching an enemy with a good Hookshot into Power Cogs sets up a strong opportunity for Crystal Maiden. With a target trapped and isolated, she can often channel a full Freezing Field without immediate reprisal. Clockwerk provides the lockdown that a channeled ultimate desperately needs to be effective. The plan is simple: Clockwerk's long-range initiation forces a fight, and his cogs create a perfect zone for Crystal Maiden's ultimate. This works well for single-target pickoffs, but relies on both heroes having their long-cooldown spells available at the same time.

The success of this duo is conditional. If Crystal Maiden is out of position, the initiation is wasted. In larger teamfights, smart opponents will anticipate the combo, saving a stun to interrupt the Freezing Field channel the moment it begins. The pairing is strongest when catching enemies off guard or before they have items that grant magic immunity. In a straight-up, five-on-five fight where the enemy is prepared, it becomes much harder for Crystal Maiden to survive long enough to have her full impact, making the outcome of any engagement uncertain.
