Why this works

Setting up a kill with X Marks the Spot sounds like a perfect fit for a minefield. The idea is for Kunkka to mark an enemy, giving Techies a clear target to stack up on. However, this combo is less reliable than it seems. The setup can be obvious, as Techies needs time to place a lethal number of Proximity Mines. Even if the mines are pre-placed, good opponents will be wary of the area. Once Kunkka pulls the target back, they aren't stunned; they land and can often use a Black King Bar or defensive ability before the mines arm and detonate.

Across the game, this pairing can feel disjointed. Both heroes rely on delayed area-of-effect spells, and trying to land a Torrent on top of Techies' spells can be chaotic and lead to missed opportunities. Kunkka wants to be a frontline presence, initiating fights and cleaving through teams, while Techies prefers to control space from a distance and punish enemy movements into his territory. Their game plans don't always overlap, meaning they often pull in different directions instead of creating a cohesive strategy. This lack of natural rhythm makes them an inconsistent duo.
