How Shadow Fiend and Treant Protector perform as teammates in Dota 2 7.41e, from ranked matches.
In Dota 2 7.41e, Shadow Fiend and Treant Protector win 50.17% of ranked matches when playing on the same team, over 11,316 matches.
Facing down an entire team caught in Overgrowth is supposed to be the perfect setup. In theory, Shadow Fiend gets to walk into the middle of the fight and unleash a full Requiem of Souls. The problem is that a root doesn't stop spellcasting or item usage. A single Force Staff or a core activating Black King Bar can ruin the whole play, leaving Shadow Fiend exposed in a bad position. The timing is also tricky; Treant Protector might land a great ultimate, but if SF isn't already in position, he often can't close the distance in time to get his most effective damage off.
Earlier in the game, Living Armor provides some safety for Shadow Fiend, but it doesn't offer the aggressive setup he needs to dominate his lane. The duo relies almost entirely on their big ultimates lining up perfectly in the mid-game. Smart opponents learn to play more spread out to minimize the impact of Overgrowth, or they simply bait out one ultimate and then fight when the other is on cooldown. When the big combo doesn't land, the two heroes offer very little else for each other, as Treant can't save SF from being jumped and SF provides no follow-up control.
