Underlord vs Phantom Assassin

How this matchup plays

Thinking of Underlord as a hard counter to physical damage is a common trap in this matchup. His Atrophy Aura does reduce Phantom Assassin's base attack damage, making her laning phase harder. Pit of Malice can also seem like a perfect lockdown tool. However, much of Phantom Assassin's threat comes from Coup de Grace criticals, which provide a huge spike of damage that the aura doesn't fully mitigate. She can also use Phantom Strike to reposition around the Pit, and a timely Black King Bar activation lets her ignore the root entirely.

The dynamic often results in a game that isn't about the two heroes fighting each other directly. Underlord can control his lane and create space, but once Phantom Assassin has a few items, she isn't interested in hitting him. She wants to blink onto his backline and burst a support. Underlord's job then becomes peeling for his team, trying to catch her with his spells and tank her damage. The outcome usually depends on which hero can execute their own strategy better, not on who wins a one-on-one duel.
