Centaur Warrunner vs Mars

How this matchup plays

Trapping Centaur Warrunner inside Arena of Blood seems like a good plan, but it rarely works out for Mars. Centaur is one of the few heroes who doesn't mind being stuck in a small space with the enemy team. He’s durable enough to survive the initial damage, and every attack from Mars or his soldiers triggers Retaliate, dealing damage back. Mars wants to isolate and burst a target, but Centaur is built to endure that exact scenario and can easily turn the fight with a Hoof Stomp once the enemy commits on him. The Arena becomes a liability.

This difficult dynamic carries through the whole game. In lane, Mars can’t effectively harass with God's Rebuke because the return damage from Retaliate makes trades inefficient. Later on, a good Centaur player holds Stampede to either save a teammate caught by the Arena or to have his own team charge in and punish the commitment. Mars is forced to try and play around Centaur completely, but in messy teamfights, that's not always possible. This makes it much harder for Mars to find the clean pickoffs he needs to build momentum for his team.
