Chaos Knight vs Shadow Shaman

How this matchup plays

Pushing into Chaos Knight’s towers with Serpent Wards is often ineffective. His Phantasm illusions make short work of the wards, neutralizing Shadow Shaman’s primary objective-taking tool. This forces Shaman to rely more on his team to deal tower damage. In exchange, Shadow Shaman brings some of the best possible tools for locking down a single, high-priority target. Both Hex and Shackles can completely stop Chaos Knight's aggression, holding him in place long enough for allies to burst him down before he can get his damage off. This creates a standoff where each hero directly counters a major part of the other's game plan.

The matchup often boils down to which hero initiates on the other first. If Chaos Knight can get a Reality Rift onto a lone Shadow Shaman, the fight is usually over before Shaman can cast a spell. This forces the Shaman to play from the fog and maintain careful positioning. Conversely, if a Shadow Shaman anticipates the engagement, an instant Hex can turn CK's initiation against him, leaving him vulnerable in the middle of the enemy team. Fights are decided by which team can better enable their respective hero to catch the other one out of position.
