Dark Willow vs Mars

How this matchup plays

Picking a durable initiator like Mars into a Dark Willow often creates an awkward dynamic. Mars wants to control a fight by trapping enemies in his Arena of Blood, setting up kills for his team. Dark Willow's spells are well-suited to spoiling this plan. Shadow Realm lets her reposition or become untargetable to dodge his initial burst, even from inside the Arena. Following up with Bramble Maze or Cursed Crown can then punish Mars and his allies for committing to a fight inside the circle he created, turning his advantage into a liability.

This core interaction makes teamfights very tense. A smart Mars player will try to bait out Shadow Realm before using his ultimate, or focus on a target that can't easily escape. Dark Willow, in turn, must play from a position where she can react to the Arena without getting caught herself. The fight often hinges on this timing. If Mars can find his opening while Willow's spells are on cooldown, his initiation works as intended. If she's ready, however, she consistently makes his biggest teamfight contribution much less effective.
