Picking Skywrath Mage into a Drow Ranger often feels like a classic counter, but it's a real gamble. Skywrath brings a silence and immense magic burst that can delete Drow from the game before she can react. A well-timed Ancient Seal into Mystic Flare is usually a death sentence for her. However, the reverse is also true. Drow Ranger's Gust is an instant, long-duration silence that completely neutralizes Skywrath. A silenced Skywrath has no escape or defensive spells and dies quickly to Marksmanship-empowered attacks. The fight almost always comes down to who gets the jump.

During the laning stage, Skywrath can make Drow's life miserable with constant spell harass. His goal is to shut her down early and keep her from hitting her key item timings. As the game goes on, though, Drow finds answers. A completed Black King Bar allows her to walk through Skywrath's entire combo, and an item like Shadow Blade can let her get the initiation she needs.
