Earth Spirit vs Viper

How this matchup plays

Pushing Viper out of his own Nethertoxin with a Boulder Smash is a simple but effective way to disrupt his entire game plan. Viper wants to stand his ground and melt targets who stay in his toxic sludge, but Earth Spirit's kit is designed to move heroes against their will. A well-timed roll or kick can completely reset Viper's positioning in a teamfight, separating him from his team or pulling him away from a target he’s about to kill. Since Viper has no natural escape, any forced movement can be a death sentence if Earth Spirit has allies nearby to follow up on the initiation.

This advantage plays out most in mid-game skirmishes and ganks. An Earth Spirit can actively hunt Viper across the map, using his mobility to set up kills. Viper's defense is to get tanky enough that he can survive the initial burst and turn the fight with his sustained damage and slows. His team needs to provide good vision and support to prevent him from getting caught alone. The matchup isn't a hard counter because Earth Spirit can't usually kill a durable Viper by himself, but he consistently creates opportunities for his team to do so.
