Invoker vs Viper

How this matchup plays

Thinking you can out-pressure Invoker in lane with poison spam is a common trap. Viper wants to trade hits and apply constant damage, but Invoker has too many tools to fight back from a distance or simply disengage. A Quas-Exort build uses Forge Spirits to harass and deny from safety, avoiding trades entirely. A Quas-Wex Invoker can use Tornado to dodge key spells like Nethertoxin or just leave, then punish with mana burn from EMP. Viper is left trying to hit a target that is never forced to stand still and fight on his terms.

This problem gets much worse for Viper as the game goes on. He's a slow hero with no natural escape, making him a perfect target for Invoker's long-range initiation and burst. A single Tornado can set up a full Meteor and Deafening Blast combo that Viper often can't survive, even if he builds defensively. To have a chance, Viper needs an early Black King Bar and hopes to run straight at Invoker. But even then, Invoker can use Ghost Walk or Ice Wall to kite the immunity duration, leaving Viper exposed again. Invoker dictates the entire pace of the engagement.
