How this matchup plays

Picking Mars into a Viper isn't an automatic loss, but it creates a specific problem for your teamfight. The things that make Mars tough to kill are less effective against Viper. Most of Viper's damage comes from poison and corrosive effects over time, which bypass a lot of the physical damage reduction from Bulwark. More importantly, Nethertoxin applies a break that can disable the passive entirely, leaving Mars much more vulnerable than he wants to be, especially when trapped inside his own Arena of Blood.

This dynamic forces Mars to play carefully. During the lane, Viper's constant pressure can make it very difficult for Mars to farm. Later in the game, a good Mars player will try to initiate on Viper’s allies, using Arena of Blood to isolate them away from Viper's reach. Viper, meanwhile, wants to position himself to be a problem for Mars, knowing he can often win a direct confrontation if Mars can't get help. The matchup often comes down to whether Mars can control the rest of Viper's team before Viper can melt him.
