Morphling vs Phoenix

How this matchup plays

Thinking you can burst a Phoenix as Morphling often goes wrong. Phoenix's damage toolkit directly counters what Morphling wants to do. Sun Ray's damage scales with the target's health, so when Morphling uses Attribute Shift to gain survivability, he makes himself a much better target for the beam. At the same time, Fire Spirits cripple his attack speed, which is his main source of damage for killing anyone, let alone the Supernova egg. Morphling is left in a position where both his high-Agility and high-Strength forms feel punished.

This dynamic gives Phoenix an advantage throughout the mid-game. Morphling wants to be aggressive and hunt for kills, but Phoenix can easily turn ganks around with Supernova or save a teammate with Icarus Dive and slows. Morphling’s path to winning involves farming past this difficult timing. With enough items, particularly a Black King Bar to ignore the Fire Spirits, he can gain the damage and control needed to threaten Phoenix and the egg. The pressure is on Phoenix to use that mid-game window to create a lead his team can hold.
