How this matchup plays

Popping Pierce the Veil feels like the moment Muerta takes over a fight, but against Rubick, it's often the opposite. Rubick can instantly steal her ultimate with Spell Steal, and he frequently uses it even better. Where Muerta needs items or team setup to hold enemies in place, Rubick can simply lift a target with Telekinesis and unload the full duration of his stolen ultimate. This turns Muerta's biggest power spike into a massive liability, as her primary weapon can be turned against her team in an instant.

This threat puts Muerta in a terrible position for the entire game. She has to constantly worry about Rubick, either holding her ultimate until he's dead or using it at a bad time just to avoid the steal. This hesitation is exactly what the Rubick player wants. If Muerta doesn't use her ult, her impact is severely limited. If she does, she risks losing the fight because of it. Even if Rubick misses the ultimate, stealing The Calling is a great consolation prize that gives his team a powerful silence and zoning tool.
