Necrophos vs Shadow Shaman

How this matchup plays

Locking down and bursting a hero is Shadow Shaman's whole game plan, but trying it on Necrophos is a common trap. Shaman excels at holding one target down with Hex and Shackles, but Necrophos is uniquely built to survive that kind of burst. Once the initial Hex wears off, he can activate Ghost Shroud to negate all the physical damage from Mass Serpent Ward and any right-clicks. The amplified healing he gets in this form from Death Pulse often allows him to recover from the initial magical damage, leaving a vulnerable Shaman with all his spells on cooldown.

This turns gank attempts into risky propositions for Shadow Shaman as the game progresses. While an early rotation with a teammate can still easily kill Necrophos, his growing durability makes solo pick-offs unreliable. A failed attempt often results in Necrophos turning the fight around, chasing the slow-moving shaman down with the constant pressure from Heartstopper Aura and his spells. Shadow Shaman has to play patiently and commit his lockdown only when he has guaranteed follow-up, while Necrophos can often play more aggressively, knowing he can bait and survive the combo.
