Shadow Fiend vs Shadow Shaman

How this matchup plays

Thinking you can burst down Shadow Shaman before he becomes a threat is a common mistake. The reality is that Shadow Fiend needs time and space to land his spells, while Shadow Shaman excels at taking both away. An instant Hex will interrupt a sequence of Shadowrazes or a channelled Requiem of Souls, leaving Shadow Fiend exposed. With no innate escape, getting caught by Shackles is usually a death sentence. Shadow Shaman provides exactly the kind of long-duration, reliable lockdown that a fragile, immobile hero like SF fears most.

This pressure starts in the laning stage and never really lets up. A rotation from Shadow Shaman is almost always a successful gank on Shadow Fiend. As the game progresses, SF is forced to itemize defensively with things like Black King Bar much earlier than he'd like, delaying his own power spikes. His entire game revolves around playing around the Shaman's initiation, trying to guess where he is and bait out his spells. Meanwhile, Shadow Shaman just needs to land one of his disables to neutralize SF's contribution to a fight.
