Shadow Fiend vs Sniper

How this matchup plays

Controlling the map gets a lot easier when the enemy's core damage dealer can't get close enough to fight. Sniper's extreme attack range is a fundamental problem for Shadow Fiend, who needs to get into specific, medium-to-close distances to land his Shadowraze combo. While SF is trying to find that position, Sniper is free to attack him from well outside of retaliation range. Shrapnel adds to this problem, providing vision and a slow that makes it incredibly hard for Shadow Fiend to close the gap or escape.

This dynamic starts in the laning phase, where Sniper can heavily restrict the farm and souls Shadow Fiend needs to hit his item timings. Later on, SF is often forced to buy a Blink Dagger and hope for a perfect jump. Without it, he gets poked down from the edges of a teamfight, unable to contribute or get into position for a good Requiem of Souls. The whole game puts the burden of perfect execution on Shadow Fiend, while Sniper gets to sit comfortably behind his team and apply constant pressure.
