Pangolier vs Phantom Assassin

How this matchup plays

Thinking that Pangolier naturally handles physical damage can be a trap against Phantom Assassin. His Swashbuckle damage comes in many small instances, which gives her plenty of time to react. Phantom Assassin can use Phantom Strike to either close the gap or escape to a nearby creep, completely resetting the engagement. Her Blur also makes it hard for Pangolier to connect with his attacks if he builds for physical damage. He really needs his ultimate to control her, as his other spells don't offer a reliable lockdown against her mobility.

The matchup often comes down to who gets the jump. If Phantom Assassin finds Pangolier out of position, she can often burst him before he has a chance to use Rolling Thunder to escape. On the other hand, a well-timed Rolling Thunder in a teamfight can stun her long enough for his allies to delete her before she can fight back. It becomes a game of vision and initiation, where neither hero has a clear, inherent advantage and both are looking to exploit a brief window of opportunity.
