Phoenix vs Pugna

How this matchup plays

Putting a Nether Ward down is usually Pugna’s way of punishing enemies for casting spells, but it barely affects Phoenix. Since Icarus Dive and Fire Spirits cost health instead of mana, Phoenix can use his main mobility and setup tools without taking any damage from the Ward. This gives him a lot of freedom to skirmish and control fights in the mid-game, whereas other spell-heavy heroes would have to play much more carefully around Pugna. Phoenix essentially gets to ignore a major part of what makes Pugna effective against casters.

The matchup isn't one-sided, though, because Pugna has a direct answer to Supernova. His Life Drain can quickly burn down the egg from a safe distance, often securing the kill before the stun goes off. A fight often comes down to positioning: Phoenix needs to find a spot for his ultimate where Pugna can't safely channel on it, while the Pugna player is always looking for an angle to do exactly that. This gives Pugna clear counter-play, keeping the overall advantage for Phoenix slight.
