Phoenix vs Tusk

How this matchup plays

Picking a melee initiator like Tusk into Phoenix is a difficult choice because Phoenix's kit is designed to punish that exact kind of commitment. Tusk wants to use Snowball to get on top of a target for a quick kill, but Phoenix can often escape the initial burst with Icarus Dive. Even if Tusk connects, a full salvo of Fire Spirits will cripple his attack speed, making it impossible to follow up on a Walrus Punch or fight his way out. Supernova is the real deal-breaker; Tusk is a melee hero who has to stand right next to the egg, making him an easy target while he tries to slowly chip it down.

Across the game, this dynamic forces Tusk to play cautiously. Early gank attempts on Phoenix are risky and can easily backfire once Fire Spirits are online. In teamfights, the Phoenix player can hold their spells to specifically counter Tusk's initiation. Tusk's only real option is to try and bait out Phoenix's key abilities on someone else or coordinate a massive burst on the egg with his entire team. Otherwise, he finds himself either unable to start fights or stuck in a losing position after he commits.
