Phoenix vs Venomancer

How this matchup plays

Applying your poisons to a Phoenix often feels like a waste of mana. So much of what makes Venomancer effective is negated by Phoenix's kit. Icarus Dive provides a clean escape from slows and Plague Ward traps, allowing Phoenix to easily reset his position. Even if Venomancer lands a good Venomous Gale, Phoenix can often survive long enough to retaliate. The most defining interaction is with Supernova. Venomancer's damage is dealt slowly over time, making him one of the worst heroes in the game for destroying the egg, which requires a set number of fast attacks. Phoenix can frequently use his ultimate without fear.

This dynamic shapes the entire game. In lane, Phoenix can use Fire Spirits to cripple Venomancer’s attack speed, winning trades and shrugging off harassment. During mid-game teamfights, a big Poison Nova from Venomancer can be completely turned around by a well-timed Supernova, which cleanses the poison and resets the fight under favorable terms for the Phoenix's team. The Venomancer is forced to rely entirely on his teammates to have the right kind of damage to deal with the egg, as he himself is a spectator while it burns. Phoenix can play aggressively, knowing his biggest threat is effectively neutralized.
