Pugna vs Skywrath Mage

How this matchup plays

Trying to burst a target as Skywrath Mage feels incredibly risky against a good Pugna. The entire Skywrath combo costs a huge amount of mana, which makes Nether Ward a death sentence. If that Ward is up before Skywrath can cast his silence, he can easily kill himself trying to secure a kill with Mystic Flare. Pugna can also use Decrepify to survive follow-up damage or amplify his own spells. However, the reverse is also true. A quick Ancient Seal from Skywrath means Pugna can't cast anything and becomes a very easy target. It's a genuine duel of who gets the drop on whom.

This tension defines the lane, where a single misstep from either hero often results in their death. It's a contest of positioning and reaction speed. Later on, teamfights revolve around this same problem. If Pugna places his Nether Ward in a key area, Skywrath Mage is effectively zoned out and can't contribute without dying. But if Skywrath gets the jump with a Blink Dagger, he can delete Pugna before he can react. The outcome of their interactions depends almost entirely on individual execution from moment to moment.
