Using Sonic Wave to finish a fight leaves Queen of Pain’s best spell exposed for Rubick. A successful Spell Steal provides his team with a second, high-impact ultimate, often on a shorter cooldown. Even stealing her Blink is a huge win, giving Rubick a level of safety and initiation potential he normally lacks. Because Queen of Pain’s identity is tied so closely to these abilities, the constant threat of having them stolen and used against her can disrupt her game plan and limit her aggression.

This pressure creates a tense mind game across the map. A clever Queen of Pain will try to bait the steal with Scream of Pain, while a patient Rubick can hold out for the more valuable spell. Earlier in the game, Rubick’s Fade Bolt can make last-hitting difficult, and Telekinesis can punish a poorly timed Blink. Still, Queen of Pain is one of the most mobile heroes in the game and can often play around Rubick’s cooldowns, which keeps the matchup from being completely one-sided.
