Troll Warlord vs Viper

How this matchup plays

Thinking Viper automatically crushes this matchup is a common trap. While Nethertoxin is a huge pain for Troll Warlord, breaking his Fervor stacks and crippling his right-clicks, the dynamic changes completely once Battle Trance comes online. Troll's ultimate provides a strong dispel, letting him shrug off the initial slow from Viper Strike. For its duration, he can't be slowed at all, which forces Viper to face him head-on without his best kiting tools. The entire duel hinges on that one cooldown.

This means the early lane is usually Viper's to control. His goal is to be as obnoxious as possible with Poison Attack and deny farm, delaying Troll's key items. A good Troll player plays patiently, uses Whirling Axes to secure creeps from a distance, and waits for his moment. Post-level six, it becomes a cat-and-mouse game. If Viper or his team can bait out Battle Trance and disengage, Troll is left vulnerable. But if Troll Warlord manages to close the gap and press his ultimate, Viper often melts before he can get away.
