Why this works

Securing a key kill often relies on timing Primal Beast's lockdown with Ancient Apparition's ultimate. Primal Beast can charge in and use Pulverize to isolate and damage a hero. The main value from Ancient Apparition comes from Ice Blast, which prevents any healing saves on that target and ensures the kill if their health drops low enough to shatter. Ice Vortex can also provide a small amount of setup, slowing a target to help Primal Beast connect, but the core of their interaction is the way Ice Blast confirms kills that Primal Beast starts.

In game, this means Primal Beast often has to commit for a pickoff, counting on a well-timed Ice Blast from across the map. The entire attempt can fail if the target survives the initial burst or if the enemy team can turn on Primal Beast before the ultimate has its full effect. Since Ancient Apparition plays from the back line, he offers no direct follow-up or protection if the initial charge goes poorly. This makes their combination feel very dependent on perfect execution, with little room for error.
