Lion + Lycan

Why this works

Picking Lion alongside a Lycan often creates a clash in game plans. Lion's whole deal is methodical lockdown: he wants to catch a target with Hex or Earth Spike, drain their mana, and delete them with Finger of Death. This is a deliberate process that holds one enemy in place. Lycan, on the other hand, wants to use Shapeshift to run at the enemy team at maximum speed with his wolves. He doesn't want to stop and wait for a careful setup; he wants to overwhelm a target with physical damage immediately. The core issue is this tempo mismatch between Lion's patient control and Lycan's hyper-aggressive charge.

In practice, this means Lycan can easily outrun his own support during mid-game fights. By the time Lycan has closed the distance on a backline hero, Lion might still be too far away to land a crucial disable. While a well-timed Hex on Lycan's target is obviously still powerful, the duo often feels like they're playing two different games. Lycan wants to take Roshan and demolish buildings with his army, a strategy where Lion's single-target burst and disables provide less value than a support who can buff the team or help sustain a push.
