Why this works

Catching someone inside Riki's Smoke Screen creates a perfect kill zone for Phantom Lancer. The silence prevents the target from using spells or items to escape, while the miss chance keeps PL's main hero safe. This gives Phantom Lancer free rein to attack, rapidly spawning illusions with Juxtapose until the victim is overwhelmed. Both heroes have gap closers to initiate together, and the combined physical burst is often too much for a single target to survive. The target is trapped, silenced, and surrounded by illusions, making it a very one-sided fight.

This hunting duo comes online early and can control the entire mid-game. Riki's permanent invisibility allows him to scout for isolated targets, setting up easy kills for Phantom Lancer to follow up on. The constant threat of getting picked off forces the enemy team to group together, which slows their farm and cedes map control. This pressure buys Phantom Lancer the space he needs to farm his core items. To counter this, opponents must invest heavily in detection and defensive items, but playing around Smoke Screen's silence remains a constant challenge.
